Prepare

What happens at a first conversation?

Start with the concern that brought you here. Bring your questions and ask how the assessment would lead to a decision.

What you can bring

A list of medicines and supplements, your health questions, and any records the service asks you to share.

What you can ask for

Choosing from a treatment menu without first assessing your problem is improper care, says the national group of state medical boards.

Before offering treatment, the doctor needs to assess your concern and gather the information needed to make a decision.

Ask how the doctor will decide whether any treatment is appropriate.

Bringing your list and questions does not mean you have agreed to treatment.

Ask how questions can go both ways

That group’s guidance, checked September 26, 2026, requires a way for patients to put their own follow-up questions to the doctor.

Ask who will respond, how to reach them, and what happens if you want another conversation.

Tests depend on the assessment

Medical board guidance calls for a doctor to complete, arrange, or refer for tests that the assessment needs.

For each suggested test, ask which decision its result would help make. Ask how you will get the result and discuss it.

Before the conversation ends

  • What do you think explains my concern?
  • What information is still missing?
  • What are the options, including waiting or doing nothing for now?
  • How would we review the decision later?
