Check coverage
Could my insurance help with the cost?
Name the proposed medicine when asking your plan about coverage, including the reason for prescribing it and any permission required before filling it.
The Medicare examples below concern weight and diabetes medicines. They do not promise payment for the care visit or treatment you came to check.
GLP-1 medicines imitate a signal within the body that helps control appetite and blood sugar.
Compare a possible route with your plan’s answer
A possible route
As of September 26, 2026, some weight medicines can receive ordinary Medicare drug coverage for another accepted use, including treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Other examples include semaglutide (Wegovy) for heart risk in certain adults with excess weight and existing heart disease.
Another example is tirzepatide (Zepbound) for adults with obesity whose obstructive sleep apnea is moderate to severe.
With obstructive sleep apnea, a blocked airway repeatedly stops breathing while the person sleeps. Obesity means weight high enough to be a health concern.
Whether the plan pays still rests on its list of medicines and its permission before filling the prescription.
Give the plan the exact medicine name and diagnosis; permission to cover that use does not guarantee payment.
A confirmed answer
Ask the plan to name the covered product, any conditions, and what you would pay. Keep the answer with your cost notes.
A temporary Medicare route has separate rules
For certain weight medicines, the temporary programme called Medicare GLP-1 Bridge has a $50 monthly payment, as of September 26, 2026.
It operates outside the usual Medicare drug benefit, beginning July 1, 2026 and ending December 31, 2027.
You need to meet its entry rules, have a prescription, and get permission before the medicine is supplied.
It covers orforglipron (Foundayo) tablets, semaglutide (Wegovy) injections or tablets, and tirzepatide (Zepbound) in a KwikPen.
Zepbound single-dose vials and single-dose pens are not included.
KwikPen is the name of the included injection device; ask the pharmacist to confirm the exact product.
The $50 does not count toward the usual Medicare drug benefit’s yearly spending limit.
Coupons and help for people on low incomes cannot lower that payment.
Who can use the $50 programme?
The entry rules checked September 26, 2026 require you to be at least 18 and in a qualifying Medicare drug plan.
Ask your prescriber for your BMI, a number that compares weight with height.
The programme checks your weight and health when this medicine treatment began.
Its weight test is met by a BMI of 35 or more.
For a BMI of 30 or more, one listed condition must also apply: kidney disease at stage 3a or above, hard-to-control high blood pressure, or a specific heart-failure type.
The heart-failure type must be recorded as “heart failure with preserved ejection fraction”.
Have your doctor check whether your record names that diagnosis.
For the blood-pressure test, despite two blood-pressure medicines, the upper reading must be above 140 or the lower reading above 90 mm Hg.
The unit mm Hg is the unit used on a blood-pressure reading.
At a BMI of 27 or more, a qualifying condition is needed: artery disease in the limbs causing symptoms, a previous heart attack or stroke, or pre-diabetes.
With pre-diabetes, blood sugar exceeds the normal range but stays below the level used for a diabetes diagnosis.
A Part D plan payment for a GLP-1 medicine in 2026 rules out the Bridge in 2026.
Part D is Medicare drug coverage. Ask your plan whether its type of drug coverage qualifies.
The prescription must fit into an ongoing plan covering food and physical activity.
Ask your prescriber and plan to check these rules before applying.
When the usual Medicare route applies instead
The Bridge excludes people who have type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnea that is moderate to severe.
A certain fatty liver illness with moderate to advanced scarring also rules out the Bridge.
Its medical name is noncirrhotic MASH; the rule does not exclude every fatty liver diagnosis.
Ask your doctor whether the diagnosis in your record matches this rule.
A prescription to reduce the risk of serious heart or blood-vessel events also goes through the usual drug plan.
These uses can go through ordinary Medicare drug coverage, which still needs a decision from your plan.
Make the insurance words plain
Formulary means the list your insurance plan uses to name medicines it may cover.
Prior authorization means the plan must give permission before the prescription is filled.
- Is the exact product covered for this reason?
- Who sends the permission request?
- What is my share of the cost?
- What happens if the request is refused?
